Philosophy

I believe all humans are creative. Art making and creating is a testament to the human endeavor. This belief guides me as I teach my young students. I believe that all children are capable of expressing themselves through the visual arts.

I value visual literacy in art education. Helping students understand their world by giving them the tools they need to "read" images is my goal.

I value creative problem solving in art education. We live in a society where creative thinking and innovative solutions are essential work skills.  My goal is to create learning environments where my students can cultivate the habits of mind that support creative problem solving.

I value individual artistic expression. I strive to encourage each student to formulate their ideas into action and give them the technical skills to convey what is conjured in their imagination. I promote respect and kindness in the process of expressing, critiquing, and evaluating works of art by all artists.
