Hello everyone!

I'm officially back in blogging mode. Here are some major updates.

1.) I am now a National Board Certified Teacher! I passed! It took me 2 years of really hard work, but I did it. Now to consistently perform at the distinguished level every day...that is the challenge.

2.) I've transformed my program from a DBAE (Discipline Based Art Education - basically teaching the elements and principles of design with step by step teacher led projects) to TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behaviors - the child is the artist)
Check out the TAB website for all the details.

I spent the Summer reflecting on my program and the new state standards. I determined that I needed to change. My program needed to change if I were to truly teach these new standards.

I came into my building in August and designed my art room to be house studio centers where my students could go and explore. Everything changed. No more assigned tables, no more cookie cutter projects that only some kids appreciated. This year, my kids were going to behave like artists.

They will:
Envision
Reflect
Understand Art Worlds
Engage and Persist
Express
Observe
Stretch and Explore
Develop Craft

They will learn to apply the 8 Studio Habits of Mind. (D. Janquith) STUDIO THINKING

I wanted to share the wonderful things my art students are creating in class, so stay tuned!

Each year the 4th grade students perform a Martin Luther King Jr. program for the entire school. They sing songs, speak poetry, and recite spoken word about our nation's civil rights history and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is a really powerful performance that moves me to tears.

Last year, I had my 4th grade students create a painted paper mural to display during their performance. But not just a single class before. They were inspired by Faith Ringgold's "Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky". The mural received a very positive response from the kids, the staff, and the parents. I decided to do something similar this year.

I began by introducing my students to Faith Ringgold's book, "My Dream of Martin Luther King".

We closely examined the artwork and the students created sketches inspired by the book's illustrations. I also shared a short clip of Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech.

The next class, we worked together in choosing from their sketches and the book's illustrations in creating the composition for the painted mural. We worked in small teams to create the various sections of the mural. The kids were really excited to create!

We decided to have teams for:
Martin Luther King Jr.
The Dream Speech crowd
and Text quote
another class created doves for peace signs

Each small team was responsible for these sections of the mural. I provided printed resources and laid out their supplies. It was amazing how they set out to accomplish these goals. Each student was engaged in their role and we achieved the completed mural in 2, 45 minute classes.

Upon reflection, I believe my students were engaging in most of these 21st Century skills.

I will continue to find ways for my students to hone these skills and create authentic art that is meaningful to them.

I'm not entirely sure if anyone out there reads my blog regularly but you may have noticed my posting has dropped off to once a month. I was trying to post once a week and was able to manage this goal for over a year. However, now, it isn't sustainable. Enter National Boards work....

This work is consuming. It is worthwhile...but consuming. I need to focus my energy on this process as well as keep up my teaching standards (hello 11-12 hour work days).

I'll try to update this blog monthly but forgive me if I do not.

First grade artists were introduced to the artist Wassily Kandinsky. I shared the book, "The Noisy Paintbox" written by Barb Rosenstock.
I appreciate the rich language and artwork in this book, though some of the vocabulary is beyond the 1st grade lexicon, it can be adapted for the younger set. For example, when the word cobalt is used, I say, "Cobalt Blue". Just so my kids, have some bearing on what is being communicated.

We discussed the lines, shapes and colors of his paintings and how they were named using musical words.

Students offered their interpretations of his paintings and then set to work creating paintings using red, yellow, and turquoise crayola tempera paint. I encouraged them to work with yellow first, then red, then turquoise, mixing colors directly on their paper. They rediscovered/remembered that these colors create orange, purple, and green...the secondary colors. Last, they used black to create final details. I did give some guidance in asking them to paint 2 shapes with yellow paint, 2 lines with red, and 2 more shapes with blue. They could make any shapes or lines they wished.
The goal was to review primary and secondary color mixing and use lines, shapes and colors to create an abstract painting inspired by Wassily Kandinksy. Here are their results!

Wow, this project was, well....enduring.

It began with our landscape unit of study. I wanted to offer my students a unique creative experience so I had researched ways to create 3D landscapes. My students really love creating 3D (not surprising, it is my favorite too...I really passionate about it). This art making endeavor ended up taking us 6 - 8 classes to complete, from introduction to final rubric assessments.

About 4 classes in, I asked my classes if they were still excited about working on their tunnel books and by and large, everyone was still invested. I was surprised and pleased!

I am going to try and keep this succinct because I could write essays about the process, and I will, since I'm using this unit for my National Boards portfolio.

Our learning objectives were:

Our lesson sequence was:

Day 1 - Introduction to key vocabulary with visual examples in art history (google slides), created sketches, and assessed comprehension of landscape vocabulary

Day 2 - Examined our sketches, planned for construction, introduction to construction

Day 3 - Created a background for the tunnel book

Day 4 - Created and assembled middle ground sections with accordion sides

Day 5 - Created foreground and attached viewfinder - assessed works in progress

Day 6/7 - Finalized construction, peer reviews

Day 8 - Self assessed with co-written rubric (teacher + student input)

Here are some more the results. I didn't take many process photos because I was so busy chatting with the artists about their work.

1st graders are wrapping up their studies of mixed media collages with this book, "Cat and Bird", by Geraldine Elschner. I began the lesson by reading this book aloud to my students and then we discussed the artwork together.

We used some visual thinking strategies in our talks about the landscapes in the book. My students pointed out that the cat was chasing the bird over rooftops, bridges, and that the horizon line was important in knowing where the sky was separate from the ground.

Next my students used oil pastels on construction paper to draw a horizon line and a city landscape inspired by the story. They then used geometric shapes to draw their buildings and bridges.

On the second day they added painted paper collage details such as additional buildings and bridges. Lastly, they followed me in a directed drawing of the cat, that they then cut and glued to their compositions.
I was pleased to see that these artists were able to show me their understanding of using a horizon line in a landscape. The demonstrated their use of collage techniques as well.

My 3rd grade artists have been studying landscapes for weeks. They have a solid understanding of foreground, middle ground, background, and horizon lines. I knew introducing aerial landscapes and a bird's (or in this case, plane's) eye view would make sense to them when creating their drawn artworks. This group of artist were way ahead of the other classes, so we cranked out these beauties in one day.

I began by asking them if they've ever flown in a plane or visited Mt. Rainier. Surprisingly, a lot had!

Next, I shared images of Mt. Rainier, the highest mountain in the Cascade range of the Pacific Northwest as well as our state of Washington. This mountain has a prominent place in our school's landscape. When you exit our school, Mt. Rainier is there, gazing down on you. I knew my students would appreciate illustrating the mountain in this unique way.

Then I performed a guided drawing demonstration inspired by the aerial photographs from an airplane. They used colored pencils to finish them.

Some students asked if they could depict Mt. Rainier erupting, since it is a volcano and all, so I said go for it. I left it up to their imagination from there. Here are some results!

This was a 2 day art experience for my young artists and produced really fun results. I learned that this class was learning about 3-D forms in their classroom, so I thought it natural for them to produce them in a 3-D paper sculptures. I know this class has accelerated art skills, I knew they could handle the technical motor skills required.

We began on the first day reviewing lines and create line patterns on a rectangular paper. I then demonstrated how to bend the paper into a cylinder shape and glue it in place. I then shared how to make cuts on one end of the cylinder to create flaps. I used a flower petal analogy so they understand that these flaps should be the same size, like flower petals. Then then glued these to a base paper. They could make as many as they could in the remaining time we had in class.

The second day I demonstrated how to attach strips of paper into an X and then bend each one to join them together with glue. This would produce a sphere form. They could make as many as them wanted. I also gave them black strips of paper to use for creating attachments. They've already practiced bending, folding and attaching paper in this lesson, Lines That Wiggle.

They had a blast building these sculptures. It was really sweet to watch them help each other and share their engineering ideas. I wish I could have snapped more photos but I was having so much fun talking with them about their creations.
I was thrilled to learn that my district's photographer would be visiting my art room to capture the action of art making. Mrs. Mulcrone's 1st grade class was busy that day learning how to create a collage inspired by the book, "Stellaluna". (They had studied bats and written a report prior to this lesson). These young artists had lots of practice creating collages before this day, so they were ready to shine for the photographer.

Here are the photographs from that wonderful day. Aren't they just the cutest? I am so proud of them. When I opened up my browser and saw the photos on the district site, I squee'd with happiness! My sweet little firsties!
The 3rd grade artists have been busy learning about landscapes in visual art.

This unit began be introducing students to key vocabulary words such as: horizon line, foreground, middle ground, and background. We analyzed several examples of paintings and photographs in order to determine where in the imagery these terms were illustrated.

To develop their understanding of these terms, they were asked to generate a example of a landscape using blocks, clay, and other art supplies on their tables.

This exercise was to prepare them for their final larger mixed-media pop-up landscapes. I could assess their understanding of the terms and techniques with these prototypes.

The following class the students were given their choice of colored card stock paper (a stiffer/stronger paper) for their background/foreground. I reviewed upon and encouraged them to use collage and mixed media techniques to add visual elements to communicate their landscape ideas.
Finally, they self-assessed their pop-up landscapes by determining if their work showed a landscape with a horizon line (the central fold), foreground, middle ground pop outs, and backgrounds. They also said that there should be good craftsmanship and details.
I wanted the artists to have some subject matter choices, so I was flexible with their content so long as they showed a landscape (view of outdoors). They had a lot of fun creating these, some students went home and created more!
Have you read the picture book, "Creepy Carrots", by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Peter Brown? My students absolutely love the artwork in this fun story about Jasper Rabbit and his love/fear of carrots. We were inspired by the illustrator, Peter Brown and created our collages.

I began this lesson by reading the story to my 1st grade artists. We looked closely at the artwork by the amazing Peter Brown. We noticed how he used black, white and grey to create the backgrounds and used orange for the carrots. It really made the carrots pop!

Next, we created the background landscape with black and gray construction paper plus white chalk.

I asked my students to create a white cloud with the chalk and rounded hill with gray paper.
Next we drew organic carrot shapes with our orange painted paper, cut them out and glued them to the background.

The next class we added fun facial features for our creepy carrots, carrot textures, and even Jasper Rabbit!

My 4th grade artists learned about the power of visual symbols by examining the big ideas of peace and hope. We discussed how artists use white doves, olive branches, the 2 fingers, and the linear symbol represent these concepts. We determine what peace and hope represent in our lives and why it is important to strive for those things.

After these discussions my students practiced sketching various symbols and chose one to use for their printing design. I then asked them to create a stencil to use for their Gelli-Plate monoprints.

I shared my demonstration video with them all before they created 2 prints using 2 colors.

Since my school is focusing on the theme of "hope" this year, I decided to create some thematic artwork with my students. My 5th grade artists studied the French contemporary street artist, Mademoiselle Maurice. I discovered her on Instagram when searching through street art hashtags. I knew my students would appreciate her art since it was bright, unique, and origami. My kids love origami.

I introduced Mademoiselle Maurice with some videos.

Then I shared with them several examples of her mural work around the world. I asked them to describe her work in each example. They came up with descriptions like colorful, fun, creative, positive, beautiful, unique, and brave. I then asked them if they could figure out how she created her words in her ephemeral street murals. They discovered that placing the edges of the origami forms along the letters edges would create a negative space.

Then I showed them a video of her folding an origami bird, which is the form we were going to create for our own murals.

I had sketched the word HOPE on a large piece of craft paper and asked the students to create origami birds to then tape to the contours of the letters. After the first day this is what we had.

After the 2nd day we had these. The kids seemed proud of their accomplishment and satisfied that they collaborated to create a cool piece of "street art" for their school.

I then displayed their work in the 5th grade wing hallways.

So I shared their work on Instagram and tagged Mademoiselle Maurice, she commented back with this!

I agree, they did a great job! Thanks for stopping by!
I really love the look of painted paper and my students seem to REALLY enjoy creating them. I was inspired to teach this lesson by looking at the work of Laura Lohmann over at The Painted Paper. She is the master in my opinion and the work her students create in the Fall is absolutely stunning. You can check it out here.

We spent a lot of time exploring and using a variety of painting tools in creating textures in paint. It was a blast! Then we set to creating warm & cool color painted papers.

The next class we looked at geometric vs. organic shapes. With their cool papers, they were to create 2 geometric rectangles. With their warm papers, they were challenged to draw organic pumpkin shapes and cut them out for collage. They demonstrated their understanding of drawing, cutting, overlapping, and collage techniques in assembling their Pumpkin landscapes.

The last class, they were given oil pastels to add details like highlights, shadows, vines, stars, a moon, and more. Most students were compelled to transform their pumpkins in to Jack-o-lanterns since Halloween is closing in and it is a huge part of their visual culture.

It is finally up, our school-wide self portrait installation is in our school hallway. I shared the processes of creating theses beauties in my last post school-wide-self-portraits.

The rainbow of monochromatic color portraits isn't a new idea. You can see these all over Pinterest or a perform a Google search. I decided that I had to try it out with my students.

With the help of 2 wonderful parent volunteers, this portrait mural was assembled and installed in our central hallway next to the library.

I've love watching my students stop and search for their self portrait. I also look forward to October conferences when they can show their parents.

Overall, I'd say this collaboration was as success and the kids really took pride in their contribution.

During our first staff in-service day back in August, our entire staff wrote on a large poster what they hoped for the North Star students. This poster is hung just outside the library which is central in our school. One of our 3rd grade teachers, who is pursuing her principal credential, guided the staff through this process and asked each teacher to have their students answer the same questions for themselves.

I decided to build off of this idea and have each student create a self portrait in a monochromatic color to go along with the staff/student posters. Next week, all the portraits will be finished and me and a team of parent volunteers will assemble and display them. I'll be sure to share photos once it is up.

Here are the flipped lessons I shared with my students to teach them about portraiture and monochromatic color.

When I meet my kinder students each year I love to introduce them to the art room by exploring the element of Line. It is an element they use as they learn to write letters and numbers. I also want to assess their motor skills. This paper sculpture lesson challenges them to create different types of lines by bending and folding paper while arranging them on a paper base.

I begin the lesson by reading the book "Lines that Wiggle", by Candace Whitman. This book as fantastic illustrations and wonderful rhymes about a variety of lines. Next, I ask the students to look around the room for examples of different lines. This allows me to assess whether they can identify and name lines.

When they've identified straight, curved, angle, and spiral lines I demonstrate how to change a flat paper strip into different types of lines. I show them how to apply glue and attach these strips to a base to create a sculpture. We talk about what a sculpture is and how it is different than a drawing. They are given lots of strips and paper base and off they go.

Each students' sculpture is unique. I really love when they tell me what each strip represents. For example, a student will point to a looped strip and tell me that it is a car and a curved strip is a bridge. Their powerful imaginations make this project really fun for both them and me.
We have just wrapped up our 1st full week back at school and I couldn't be more proud of my art students. This is my third year teaching my kids and they have all grown so much in their art education. I was amazed how much they had remembered from past lessons and even more impressed how willing they were to take risks. I wanted our first art classes to be fun and exciting yet also cover the important art room expectations.

Before school began I was researching new ideas to kick off the year and I read an article form the Art of Education site about classroom management. The author, Melissa Purtee, shared a game called "What's in the bag?" I loved how this game is designed to teach classroom behaviors such as teamwork, creative problem solving, and being on task. I adapted it for my teaching setting by requiring each class to disassemble their work at the end of class. This adaption, which was at first a means to have enough supplies for the 480+ kids I teach, but then became a valuable lesson in letting things go. It was really hard for some kids to take their work apart but allowed them to practice coping with this type of process.
Another game I played was a drawing game I read from Mona Brooks book called, "Drawing with Children". I read commands centered on the 5 basic elements of shape and my students responded by painting the command. I gave them 4 neon color paints, which they loved, to play the game. The results were beautiful. Even though they all had the same commands, each work was authentic in the response. It was a great game in reviewing drawing techniques and practice classroom expectations.
I feel one of my main goals this
year is to better communicate how important art education is to their
children's lives. The esteemed art education researcher Elliot Eisner
created a powerful list of 10 lessons the arts teach. I want to share
that here on my blog for my families and blog followers everywhere.

School starts up next week so I've been busy making changes to my room's layout, displays, entrance, and curriculum. I also had a last name change this Summer. I was married in June and now my new last name is Nettels. I hope my students catch on quickly. I'm sure I'll still get some "Miss Nintzes".

I am sharing an image of my the art room's entryway. I designed it to exhibit my students' art work they give me outside of class. The past couple of years I've taped them to my cabinets but by about mid-year, my cabinet would have layers and layers of student work. It looked, well, unruly.

I thought it would be great to create a showcase space in the hall to share their work and keep my cabinet nice and tidy. I have a passion for gardening so I created the "Art Garden Gallery" with salon style golden framed walls. I painted the gold frames with various sizes and shapes for a bit of variety. I even re-purposed the paper flowers I made for my wedding for accents. I hope they kids enjoy it!

Reduction Print is a multi-color print in which the separate colors printed from the same plate at different stages.

Reduction printmaking with foam plates was a home-run! I want to thank Mr. Stoller at Thomas Elementary Art Blog for the informative and captivating post about relief printing with his 4th grade students. I knew my students needed to learn the foundations of printmaking as most of their only prior knowledge of printing was stamping and computer printing. I also knew my kids like to be challenged and that they would appreciate a the task of reduction printing.

I began the lesson by introducing a contemporary artist as inspiration. I presented Baron Batch. A former NFL football player and artist. We focused on his "Free Art" street painting examples for our direct influences. I chose his "Elephant" painting as the prime example for animal portraiture.

These were student objectives through the process of creating authentic art inspired by Batch:

I asked the students to look through wildlife magazines and choose a photograph of an animal.

They had to sketch an animal portrait in their sketchbooks for my review

They then drew a contour drawing of their chosen animal

Then traced that drawing onto a foam plate

They had to print one color onto a piece of white printing paper

The next class they added more details to their animals' faces and traced it onto their plate

They cut away (reduction) their animal from the late and inked a 2nd different color

They lined up that foam piece and pressed to print

Some students had time to choose one detail to cut away and print a 3rd color

They numbered their editions, wrote titles, and signed their work for our print exchange

These kids were so engaged in the process of printmaking because it was new and they could judge their successes by the quality of their prints. They had choices along the way that allowed for their individual expression and exciting Baron Batch neon colors to use in their designs.
Wow, Summer has just been flying by! I have been busy recharging post wedding and school year. I have been doing a lot of mountain biking, gardening, baking, hiking, traveled to Alaska, rode my bike from Seattle to Portland, and have another bike tour in the works before we start the next school year.

I will be brief in my explanations but will be photo rich! If you have any questions about the processes, inspirations, or anything at all, please write a comment on this post and I'll be sure to respond.

I will say that one helpful tool to control the printmaking madness was using the Time Timer! Wow! This thing really saved me. I would always lose track of time before this I found this beauty. If you don't have one in your art room, I STRONGLY recommend getting one.

Ok...let us start with 3rd grade. We studied the contemporary British printmaker, David Jones. We focused on Jones' work where he creates linoleum cuts inspired by dreams. We began by looking deeply at this series to share interpretations of each print.

"The Acrobat is Alarmed by an Insect", David Jones

We then shared examples of our own dreams. We then made sketches of a personal dream on drawing paper. Their sketches had to communicate dream imagery and show 2-d texture.

After that we transferred those drawings to a piece of foam plate to prepare for printing. I flipped this lesson on printmaking for these classes, you can view it on my Youtube channel.
I limited the color scheme to blue or black ink but they could print on colored printer paper.
You read it correctly. I've begun the arduous journey of pursuing my National Board certification in Art Education. If you aren't sure what that means, it is the gold standard in my profession. I've been a certified art teacher for 9 years and I believe I am ready for this next step.

I will spend 4 days at "Jump Start" this August training in Snohomish, Washington. This professional development will get me off on the right foot. I'm really excited about going for it. It will take me 2 years to complete the 4 components. There are several art teachers in my district that are also pursuing board certification so I won't be alone.

I'll post some things here and there on this blog. I truly hope that by working towards this goal that I will become a better teacher and my students will benefit from all of my hard work.

It is Summer and I have to admit, my blogging fell to the wayside. I got married a couple of weeks ago and let's just say writing up posts wasn't a priority in the final weeks of school.

I finished my last day of teaching this year on June 20th and was married 5 days later. The last big unit I taught my kiddos was printmaking and now that I've had some time to reflect, I am ready to share our successes.

This is only my 2nd year teaching art at my elementary school. Most of my students haven't had many or any art classes before they met me. I didn't get to printmaking with them last year because I had so much groundwork to lay down but I made sure to cover it this year.

Here is what we did in the primary grades. I'm not going break down all of the steps here on the blog because I made some videos on my youtube channel. If you want to know more, please submit comment below.

Kindergarten: Wayne Theibaud inspired Gum ball machine prints.
We have been studying pop art in Kindergarten and what more fun way to experiment with printmaking than be inspired by Wayne Thiebaud's 1963 painting "Three Machines".
We practiced printing lines with cardboard, and circles with recycled glue stick caps.

1st grade: We practiced printing by using styrofoam plates and used the crayola marker ink to color and print them on wet paper. We drew cupcakes and angry birds to go with the whole Pop Art theme. Unfortunately didn't get any photos because I have 30 kids in these classes at the very end of the day....I'm usually running on fumes at this point of the day.

2nd grade: We first experimented with mono-printing by painting colorful landscapes inspired by contemporary English printmaker Chris Keegan. We quickly painted tempera on plastic transparency with thick paint strokes and pressed/rubbed paper on the wet paint to pull our prints.
We cut these out and collaged them on our dried landscape paintings to make an Angry Birds game course. We glued a small piece of cardboard to the back of the Angry Birds to make them appear to fly. The kids LOVED this.
